Holiday Lamppost Decorating Instructions

Sunday, November 29, 2026

Decorating will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

It takes approximately 30 minutes to decorate one lamppost. We ask that participants finish decorating by 1:00 p.m., if possible.

Thank You!

More than 1,000 community members participate in Holiday Lamppost Decorating each year, along with 27 event captains who coordinate assignments and prepare materials for more than 525 lampposts throughout the Village of Babylon.

Thanks to everyone’s participation, the Village is transformed for the holiday season in just a few hours.

Thank you for helping make our Village a beautiful place to live, work and visit.

Important Information

  1. Advance sign-up is required.

  2. You may only decorate the lamppost assigned to you by your event captain.

  3. Your assigned lamppost will be clearly identified with a numbered tag corresponding to your decorating materials.

  4. Remove the numbered tag from the lamppost before decorating.

  5. If you are no longer able to participate, please contact the Babylon Beautification Society as soon as possible so the lamppost can be reassigned.

  6. All decorating materials are provided by the Babylon Beautification Society.

  7. Do not add additional decorations. Only materials provided by the Babylon Beautification Society may be used.

Lamppost Bulb or Holiday Lights Not Working?

Problems with lamppost bulbs or electrical outlets should be reported directly to the Village of Babylon.

Tips

  • Bring some help. Decorating is easier with more than one person, so feel free to bring family or friends.

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Many lampposts are located along busy streets. Please remain out of the roadway while decorating.

  • Keep a close eye on children. If young children are participating, we recommend having one person supervise them while others decorate.

  • Dress festively! Santa hats and holiday sweaters are encouraged.

  • Take photos! Share your lamppost decorating photos on Facebook and Instagram and tag @BabylonBBS and #BBSHoliday.

What to Bring

  • A ladder. We recommend a 6-foot ladder.

  • A marker to add your family’s or team’s name and holiday wishes to the hanging tag.

Decorating Instructions

  1. Locate your assigned lamppost.

  2. The name and number on your bag of materials will correspond with the name and number on the tag hanging from your lamppost.

  3. Remove the ribbon and numbered tag from the lamppost before decorating.

  4. With two people holding the roping, or with the roping placed on the ground so the branches hang down, begin with the plug end of the lights at the top and loosely wrap the light string around the roping. You may need to double back to use the entire string of lights.

  5. Thread one zip tie through the back of the bow.

  6. With the bow facing the street and the plug end of the lights positioned at the top of the lamppost, attach the roping to the top using the bow and zip tie as the anchor.

  7. Plug in the lights. Lampposts are on timers, so the lights will not turn on until it gets dark.

  8. Wrap the roping around the lamppost and secure it at the bottom with the second zip tie.

  9. Add your family’s or team’s name and holiday wishes to the hanging tag.

  10. Place the tag in its holder and make sure it faces the sidewalk so it can be easily seen.

If any materials are missing, please contact your event captain.
